Timberlife CTX 108

CTX 108 is a ready-for-use organic solvent-based solution containing specifically blended insecticidal and fungicidal active ingredients that provides a colourless surface treatment for protection of seasoned timber against wood borer and termite attack as well as discolouring fungi and mould growth. CTX 108 contains a high level of insecticide to provide long term protection and also to control and eradicate wood boring insects in infested timber. On application, the organic solvent provides a degree of penetration of the active ingredients into the wood structure and ensures rapid drying on the treated surfaces. After drying, any coating/finish can be applied on the treated wood surface.

Khuni Sealer Clear

Product Name: KHUNI SEALER Product Type: CONTRACTORS WOOD STABILIZING OIL Description: KHUNI SEALER is an oil/wax-based penetrating sealer that protects raw (uncoated) wood against water ingress, surface degradation and contamination. The high-quality blend of drying oils and water repellent wax components deeply penetrates, stabilizes and nourishes the wood. It therefore acts as a transit stabilizer and protective sealer that prevents excessive checking and splitting of pre-manufactured timbers during transport and storage and also repels waste splashes during building construction. KHUNI SEALER can also be used as a final finish on wood provided that a second and preferably a third coat is applied 24 hours after applying the first coat. It, however, does not provide additional protection against potential fungal and insect attack. KHUNI SEALER dries to a clear, slightly brownish matt finish. Should a durable, high quality exterior finish be required, it is recommended that SATINWOOD 28/28 Base be applied as a final coat as it contains additional wood stabilizing agents as well as fungicides and insecticides that provide added protection against mould growth, fungal staining and insect attack. Paraffin

Paraffin is a petroleum-based product commonly used in various industrial and woodworking applications. In the timber industry, paraffin is valued for its moisture-repellent and protective properties. It is often applied to the ends of freshly cut timber to reduce rapid moisture loss, helping to prevent cracking and splitting during the drying process. Paraffin can also be used as a light lubricant in timber processing, assisting with smoother cutting and planing while reducing friction on machinery. Additionally, its water-resistant characteristics make it useful in certain protective applications where timber requires temporary moisture protection. Due to its versatility and practical benefits, paraffin remains a useful supporting product within sawmills, timber yards, and woodworking environments.

Waxsol

Waxsol is an odourless, waxed based timber preservative. It is a water repellent product used mainly for the preservation and treatment of wendy houses and other exterior woods. To assist with penetration waxsol can either be thinned with paraffin (or turpentine), or it can be heated. The best method of application is a paint brush. The colour after application is a yellow- to-greenish colour and tones to brown after a couple of weeks. Waxsol does not peel or flake and does not hide or cover the natural grain of the wood.

Tar/Creosote

Creosote is a oil based wood preservative that protects against fungal decay and wood borers. It is a ready to use product that can be applied by dipping or painting with a brush. Creosote is dark brown-to-black after application. Creosote does not peel or flake and does not cover the natural grain of the wood. Creosote has an extremely pungent smell and is not recommended for internal use. Creosote is ideal for fencing poles and all exterior wood applications where there is minimum skin contact.

They are rigid enough to tolerate reasonable loads, while allowing profile designs without the risks of cracking or significant elastic recovery. ALUMINIUM-ZINC ALLOY COATING Protection for the rigid steel material is achieved when the steel passes through a bath of molten aluminium-zinc alloy. This coating combines the protection and strength of bath aluminium and zinc. A significant benefit of the zinc component is its ability to protect exposed areas such as cut edges, drilled holes and scratches. Developers of the aluminium zinc alloy steel have captured exposure data indicating corrosion protection for the underlying steel for more than 50 years in most environments. ACRYLIC PRIMING SYSTEM An acrylic coating is applied to both sides of the panel immediately after the application of the aluminium-zinc coatings. We developed this priming system in association with our steel suppliers to provide a uniform substrate that enhances the adhesion of subsequent coatings. BASECOAT The basecoat is formed by applying a custom designed acrylic resin binder. This specially formulated paint coating is made in two colours that will blend with the various stone granule colours. The basecoat serves two functions: It serves as an adhesive that bonds the stone granules to the base steel. It protects the underlying material from water. The basecoat’s adhesion process is found in its excellent ability to adhere to both the granules and the underlying acrylic priming system. We achieve optimum UV resistance with the use of a pure acrylic resin, the strongest polymer capable of being made into a water-based paint. CERAMIC COATED STONE GRANULES A protective coating as well as an attractive appearance is provided by stone granules. They further enhance the resistance to UV light while providing an array of colours. These ceramic coated granules are sized and applied in such a way to insure maximum coverage of the basecoat; therefor, allowing another layer of protection against water erosion. OVERGLAZE An acrylic overglaze is applied as a final coating that gives the granules a semi-gloss appearance. This tough, thin, acrylic finish bonds to the granules and encapsulates them with a coating that enhances the panel’s resistance to physical damage

Thatching Grass

Thatching Grass

To ensure that your lapa gives you your moneys worth, our grass is only cut, baled and stored in the winter months. Summer-cut grass is inferior in quality and has half the lifespan of winter-cut grass. Grass that has been cut in the winter not only lasts longer in your roof, but also tends to be cheaper since it is more obtainable. At Northern Poles you'll see our bundles of grass are a reasonable size at a reasonable price.

Cape Reed

Cape Reed

Cape reed is used on the inside of your thatched roof which then acts as a ceiling layer. This greatly contributes to the atmosphere and aesthetics of your lapa, as it hides away all unpleasant strands of grass, and gives you that finished touch. Cape reed is only found in the Albertinia region and with delivery charges added it is a little more expensive than grass. Cape reed is not a necessity in your roof, and a thatched roof can be built without it. Both Cape reed and grass are extremely seasonal and we recommend that you keep this in mind before starting your lapa.

Laths are thin gum poles that are mainly used horizontally in lapas and thatch roofs. Laths, like gum poles, are also CCA treated to prevent rotting and wood borers such as termites. Another every day use for laths is the making of screens, pergolas and carports. Depending on the season and availability laths can range anywhere between 15mm and 45mm in diameter. The rule of thumb is usually the shorter the lath the less they taper from top to bottom. When constructing a panel of laths, the average usage is 30 laths per meter when spaced together.
